Alessandro Franchi (painter)

Alessandro Franchi (born March 15, 1838 in Prato , † April 29, 1914 in Siena ) was an Italian portraitist and fresco painter . The main focus of his activity was between Prato, Siena and Liguria . He studied at the Sienese Academy of Fine Arts, where he later taught and became its director. His most important works with sacred themes can be found in the Duomo of Siena : the mosaics of the facade with the representation of the Lord and the floor decorations with virtue and the Bible stories .

Equally important is the fully frescoed chapel known as Vinaccesi in Prato Cathedral , which shows stories from the Old Testament. Likewise, a painting depicting the transport of the body of St. Stephen and is located in the diocesan museum opposite; a painting he created in 1860 when he was only 21 years old.

His painterly style, idealizing but with realistic hints, is characterized by an abundance of very bright colors that reconnect with various international currents such as the Nazarenes and the Italian romance of the Hayezan expression.
