Alessandro Rossi (sculptor)
Alessandro Rossi (* 1820 in Lugano ; † January 15, 1891 in Milan ) was a Swiss sculptor and lecturer.
Life
Alessandro Rossi was born the son of the landowner Pietro Rossi von Sessa and Rosa Trevioli. After attending the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan from 1836 to 1845, he worked as a drawing teacher at various schools in Milan, especially at the Scuola professionale operaia he founded . He also worked as a sculptor in the Lombard capital. Afterwards he returned to Lugano and was inspector of the cantonal drawing schools. In Ticino he was also the director of an elementary ornament course for technical schools.
He mainly made allegorical sculptures ( La vendemmia , 1881) and memorials and funerary monuments, including those commissioned by the Locarno municipality in 1856 in honor of Giovanni Antonio Marcacci (cemetery and Piazza Sant'Antonio), as well as cemetery works for several families from Lugano and Gentilino
