The Aletsch half marathon is the highest half marathon in Europe. It has been taking place on Bettmeralp since 1986 , initially under the name Gletscherlauf over 17.5 km, from 2000 over the current distance.
The route begins at the mountain station of the Bettmeralpbahn at 1950 m above sea level. First, it goes through the village of Bettmeralp, then in an arch along the Bettmersee to Riederalp and Riederfurka and from there, above the Aletsch Forest and the Aletsch Glacier , which are part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site , over the Moosfluh to the Bettmerhorn (2643 m above sea level). A total of 800 meters uphill and 100 meters downhill have to be mastered.
