Alex Gray (born November 29, 1953 in Columbus , Ohio) is an American artist. He became famous for his Sacred Mirrors , published in 1986 , a series of 21 life-size depictions of people, which depict human bodies on various levels with anatomical accuracy, starting with the material level of the body and ending with a representation of spiritual images of humans; From the external anatomy to the vascular system , nervous system and bones to pictorial representations of acupuncture channels , chakras and aura levels . Alex Gray gained further fame through his artistic work around the progressive metal band Tool .

Life

The son of a graphic designer studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design from 1971 to 1973 . He later attended the Boston Museum School , where he met his future wife, the artist Allyson Rymland . With her he also gained some drug experience. At Harvard Medical School he worked for five years in the anatomy department, helped with the dissection of corpses and was thus able to study the human body and its anatomy. These experiences enabled him to make accurate anatomical drawings and illustrations.

Then Gray became a lecturer in anatomical drawing and sculpture at New York University for ten years ; today he gives courses in spiritual painting at various institutes in the USA.

He lives in New York City with his wife Allyson and their daughter, actress Zena Gray .

The booklet that accompanies the album In Utero by the grunge rock band Nirvana contains an anatomical drawing by Alex Gray entitled Muscle System (Pregnant Woman) , this drawing depicts the body structure of a pregnant woman.
