Alex Webb
Alex Webb , actually: Alexander D. Webb , (born May 5, 1952 in San Francisco , California , USA ) is an American photographer .
Life
Webb, born in San Francisco in 1952, learned photography through his father. From 1968 he pursued this hobby professionally. At Harvard University he studied literature and history (1970–1974). From 1972 he studied photography with Bruce Davidson and Charles Harbutt in the Apeiron Photo workshop in New York . After graduating, he worked as a freelance photographer and his images have been published in magazines such as LIFE , GEO and NY Times Magazine .
In 1976 he became an “associate” at Magnum . In the next few years he photographed the South of America and began to devote himself to color photography. In 1979 he became a full member of Magnum. He went on many journeys, which then inspired him to write his reports. This is how his series about the American-Mexican border region came about, for which he was awarded the Overseas Press Club Award in 1980.
Works
In 1986 he created an illustrated book called “Hot Light / Half-Made Worlds”, which Fred Ritchin counts as one of the agency's “younger major works”. He photographed the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Mexico for years and put these photographs together because for him they all represented the same tensions and mysteries. The focus is on the atmosphere of the tropics, which is particularly enhanced by the intense colors.
Webb then made a report on Haiti: "Under A Grudging Sun: Photographs From Haiti Libéré". His travels also took him to Florida again and again , which is why he published a collection of his pictures in 1996 in "From The Sunshine State: Photographs From Florida". In it he depicts the great diversity of this state by means of pictures of bathing tourists, the Everglades , golf courses, Christmas trees on the beach or deer walking across the street. His most recent works include photographs for advertisements.
