Alex de Leeuw

Alex de Leeuw is a Dutch tenor and bass saxophonist .

After studying political science , de Leeuw studied tenor saxophone at the Conservatory with Ed Bogaard . Since 1981 he has been a member of the Nederlands Saxofoon Quartet alongside Bogaard, Leo van Oostrom and Adri van Velsen , with which he has recorded several CDs. With the guitarist Rolf Koppijn and the cornetist Sytze van Duin he forms the Trio Grande , in which he plays the bass saxophone (CDs Teddy Bear's Picnic , As Time Goes By ). He is also a bass saxophonist in the Connsonant Five ensemble . He performs as a duo with the pianist Guido Nielsen . He also worked with various Dutch symphony orchestras. Composers such as Huub de Vriend , Henk Alkema , Chiel Meijering and Ida Gotkovsky wrote works for him. He has been associated with the Meer Jazz Festival for more than two decades , initially as chairman of the Meer Jazz Foundation and later as director of the festival. De Leeuw has been teaching saxophone at the art and culture center Pier K for over 30 years.
