Alexander Alexejewitsch Makarov

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Alexejewitsch Makarow ( Russian Александр Алексеевич Макаров ; born June 2, 1966 in Irkutsk ) is a Russian physicist . He is considered to be the inventor of the orbitrap .

Life

Makarov studied at the Moscow Institute of Technical Physics ( MEPhI ). After receiving his doctorate, he worked at the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GPI RAS) from 1992 . In 1996 he moved to the small high-tech company HD Technologies in Manchester . Work on a working prototype of a high-resolution mass spectrometer , the Orbitrap , was published by him in 2000. Technical advancements led to the first commercial device in 2005, which was marketed by Thermo Fisher Scientific as a coupling Linear trap / Orbitrap. The Orbitrap is now available with a linear trap (“LTQ Orbitrap”), quadrupole (“Q Exactive”) or coupled directly to an ion source (“Exactive”). Alexander Makarow has lived in Bremen with his family since 2006 and is Director of Research in Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
