Alexander Grigorievich Fischer von Waldheim , Russian Александр Григорьевич Фишер фон Вальдгейм (*, 7. May 1803 in Mainz , † July 13 jul. / 25 July 1884 greg. In Stepankowo ) was a German-born Russian botanist (and doctor). Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Fisch.Waldh. "

Life

He was the son of Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim and the godson of Alexander von Humboldt . He was tutored by his father and studied botany from the age of 14 with Carl Ludwig Goldbach (1793-1824) and Georg Franz Hoffmann in Moscow, whose daughter Natalie he married in 1830. At the age of 23 he received his doctorate in medicine in Moscow (Tractatus anatomico-physiologicus de auditu hominis). In 1826 he became adjunct professor for botany and pharmacology (from 1830 full professor) at the Medical-Surgical Academy in Moscow and director of the Botanical Garden. In 1832 he became professor of zoology at Lomonosov University and director of the Zoological Museum, which he remained until 1834. He also gave medicine courses at the Medical-Surgical Academy until its dissolution in 1843. He held various positions at Lomonosov University including Vice-Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, and he supervised the private schools in Moscow from 1840 to 1850.

He was secretary of the Société Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou from 1825 to 1835 . From 1853 to 1872 he was vice-president of the Société, from 1872 to 1884 its president.

Fischer von Waldheim dealt with plant anatomy and developed a new microscope for it. He received the Grand Cross of the Russian Order of St. Anne 1st Class and the Württemberg Order of Frederick and had been a member of the Leopoldina since 1865 .

His son Alexander Alexandrowitsch Fischer von Waldheim (1829–1920) was professor of botany in Warsaw and from 1897 to 1917 director of the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg.
