Alexander Koval

Alexander Koval (born March 14, 1922 in Berlin ; † July 31, 1986 there ) was a German editor, essayist and translator.

He became known as the editor of the series Das Lot (6 issues from October 1947 to June 1952, published by Karl H (Einz) Henssel Verlag, Berlin), which he and the French poet Alain Bosquet (then an American citizen), who won the 1952 Prix Apollinaire , and made the Paris-born American poet and critic Edouard Roditi a meeting place for international poetry in Germany. Criticism discovered in him “a new German poet of rare, yes, magical power of language”.

As a critic, Alexander Koval has published a number of essays on problems of poetry, the art of theater and film, such as Beware of European Chauvinism and Poetry and Drama of Pure Gesture .

As a translator, Koval mostly dealt with authors from France and America whose problems were close to his own, or whose translation he tried to create examples: Djuna Barnes , Henry Miller , Archibald MacLeish , Robert Lowry , Tennessee Williams , Wallace Stevens and many others.

He was also a co-founder of the Theater des Tanzes and worked as a dramaturge and assistant director a. a. with Walter Felsenstein , Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator in the most renowned theaters in Berlin.

Today his estate is looked after by the Foundation Archive of the Academy of Arts (Berlin) .
