Alexander Matveevich Zhitomirsky

Alexander Matveyevich Schitomirski ( Russian Александр Матвеевич Житомирский * May 11 jul. / 23. May  1881 greg. In Kherson ; † 16th December 1937 in Leningrad ) was a Russian composer and professor of composition.

Schitomirski was initially a violin student of Emil Młynarski at the music school of the Imperial Music Society in Odessa and of Karl Prill in Vienna. He then studied composition with Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow , Anatoli Konstantinowitsch Lyadow , Alexander Konstantinowitsch Glasunow and Nikolai Feopemptowitsch Solowjow at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory , where he taught himself from 1914. Schitomirski wrote orchestral works, including a suite (1929), a violin concerto (1937), a string quartet (1932) as well as violin and cello pieces and songs. He edited some Hebrew melodies.
