Alexander Moses (Moshe) Lapidot (born February 27, 1819 in Vilnius , † March 7, 1906 ) was a Lithuanian rabbi . Lapidot was an early supporter of the Chovevei Zion movement .

Life

Lapidot studied at Lithuanian yeshivot , including with Rabbi Israel Salanter . He acted as a rabbi in Janów, Grodno and from 1866 in Raseiniai . He published interpretations of the Torah and articles on contemporary subjects in Halevanon and other magazines. In 1887 he took part in the conference of Chibbat Zion in Druskininkai . He emphasized that he did not want to take Erez Israel into possession by the sword, but through agricultural work on the basis of a religious life. The Zion movement did not intend to "anticipate the coming of the Messiah" as claimed by rabbinic opponents. Lapidot called on the keepers of the religious tradition to join the movement and strengthen their religious element. He also urged the rich to buy land in Palestine and work the land.
