Alexander Nikititsch Panschin
Alexander Nikititsch Panschin ( Russian Александр Никитич Паншин ; English Alexander Panshin ; born September 15, 1863 in Sestrorezk , Russian Empire ; † November 4, 1904 ibid) was a Russian speed skater and figure skater .
Speed skating
Panschin became the first Russian speed skating champion and multiple Russian record holder in 1889. In 1889, he won the first world speed skating championship in Amsterdam . However, it was only included in the rating unofficially. He defeated the American champion Joseph Donoghue , who was ten years younger than Panschin. Panschin also made a name for himself as a designer and modernizer of high-speed shoes by changing the height of the shoe, the length of the runners and the tip. He had his developments made in the Sestrorezker arms factory and tested them on the lake near his apartment.

After finishing his speed skating career, he started figure skating, although in his mid-30s. He won the first Russian figure skating championship in Saint Petersburg in 1897 . He defended this title three more times until 1900.

Alexander Panschin committed suicide at the age of 41 for family reasons.
