Aleksandr Petrowitsch Hudilainen ( Finnish: Aleksanteri Petrovitš Hutilainen , Russian Александр Петрович Худилайнен , born May 2, 1956 in Slobino, Kaschinski district , Kalinin Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a former politician. He was the third President of the Republic of Karelia and the first Finnish-born President of the Republic since the end of the Soviet Union . The Karelia region was forcibly conquered during World War II and wrested from Finland . Today it is aFederal subject of the Russian Federation .

Chudilainen belongs to the minority of the " Ingermanlanders " or "Ingermanland Finns ", who should not be confused with the related Ischors . After his predecessor, the ethnic Russian Andrei Vitalievich Nelidov , left the presidency in 2012, Alexander Chudilainen became president of the republic on May 22, 2012. On February 15, 2017, Chudilainen resigned and was replaced after five years in office by the Russified ethnic Karelian Arthur Parfentschikow . It is believed that foreign and geopolitical reasons played a role in Chudilainen's abdication - such as the membership of neighboring Finland in the European Union , which is a thorn in the side of the Russian leadership in Moscow under Vladimir Putin .
