Sergei Leonidowitsch Katanandow ( Russian Серге́й Леони́дович Катана́ндов ; born April 21, 1955 in Petrozavodsk , Karelo-Finnish SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian politician of Karelian ethnicity. From 1998 to June 30, 2010 he was the political head of the Russian republic of Karelia .

Sergei Katanandov graduated from the Faculty of Industrial and Housing Construction at the Petrozavodsk State University in 1977. Then he worked as an engineer in the state construction company "Petrozavodskstroi" until 1988. In 1988 Katanandov was elected to the Soviet city of Petrozavodsk. In December 1990 he was elected mayor of his native city. In 1996 Katanandov graduated from a law school at an academy for civil servants in Saint Petersburg . On May 17, 1998, he won the election as head of the Karelian government with 49.48% of the vote against incumbent Viktor Stepanov. He took office on July 1, 1998 and was re-elected on April 28, 2002 with 53.35% of the vote. According to the amended Russian constitution, he was proposed for a third term in 2006 by Russian President Vladimir Putin . The Karelian parliament confirmed the proposal on March 3, 2006. On June 30, 2010 Katanandov resigned before the end of his third term.

Between 2010 and 2017, Katanandov was a member of the Federation Council , where he represented the Republic of Karelia and was responsible for the office of the First Deputy Committee on Federal Structures, Regional Policy and Local Government. He was also a member of the Commission for the Development of Civil Society Institutions in Russia.
