Alexander Schölch

Alexander Schölch (born October 19, 1943 in Mosbach (Baden), † August 29, 1986 in Erlangen ) was a German orientalist .

Life

Schölch studied history, political science and international law in Heidelberg and Munich. During his doctorate he was on a scholarship at the 'Middle East Center' of Oxford University , where Albert Hourani was teaching and researching. In 1972 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation on the Urabi movement (doctoral supervisor : Rudolf von Albertini ). He then did research on the history of Palestine at the Free University of Berlin . In 1975 he received a position as an academic adviser at the University of Essen and was appointed professor there in 1982.

From 1984 Schölch was Professor of Politics and Contemporary History of the Near and Middle East at the University of Erlangen . The chair was established in 1984 with funds from the Volkswagen Foundation.

Schölch died of heart failure at the age of 42.
