Alexander Schuller

Alexander Schuller (born July 15, 1934 in Beppu , Japan ) is a German sociologist .

Schuller grew up in China , mainly Hong Kong , until 1941 . In 1954 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in the USA . He then studied in Munich, Paris, London and Berlin. In 1973 he did his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with a study on curriculum and self-determination to become a Dr. phil.

Since 1975 he has taught as a professor of sociology at the Free University of Berlin. His research interests include the sociology of education and the sociology of medicine . He was head of the Institute for Social Medicine at the Free University of Berlin. Research professorships took him to Princeton and Harvard in the USA .

He is co-editor of the Paragrana series at Akademie-Verlag . Together with the sociologist Jutta Anna Kleber , he gave the anthologies Gier . On the anthropology of addiction (1993) and Verschemmte Welt. Eating and drinking historically and anthropologically (1994). Schuller coined the expression masturbation of sexuality . In 1999 he took part in the debate on Peter Sloterdijk's rules for the human park and defended Sloterdijk against accusations of having betrayed the investigation.
