Alexander Stewart (Archbishop)
Alexander Stewart (* around 1493 ; † September 9, 1513 at the Battle of Flodden Field ) was a Scottish humanist , Archbishop's elect of St Andrews and Lord Chancellor of Scotland .
Life
He was an illegitimate son of the Scottish King James IV with Marion Boyd, daughter of Archibald Boyd, Laird of Bonshaw (1454-1507). His mother married John Mure, Laird of Rowallan († 1513). As a minor, he was appointed Archbishop of St Andrews by the King in 1504 , but was never consecrated. In 1506 he went on a grand tour to the Netherlands and France and finally settled in Padua , where he studied logic and rhetoric with Erasmus von Rotterdam . He praised Alexander's character and eagerness to learn. Around 1510 Alexander was appointed Lord Chancellor of Scotland . He promoted education and founded St. Leonhard College. He joined his king in the English invasion attempt and, like his father and stepfather, was killed in the Battle of Flodden Field .
