Alexander Trotter
Alexander Pelham Trotter (born March 11, 1857 - † July 23, 1947 ) was an English electrical engineer.
He did an apprenticeship at Easton & Anderson and experimented in 1877 at Trinity College , Cambridge on Alexander Graham Bell's new receivers. He became a partner at the dynamo manufacturer Goolden and Trotter . After that he was an author for The Electrician for six years and from February 1896 he served as a state electrical engineer at the Cape of Good Hope for the electrification of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. He then acted as an advisor to the Chamber of Commerce.
His treatise The Distribution and Measurement of Illumination (before 1892) became the basis for modern lighting technology. 1917 to 1920 was president of the Illuminating Engineering Society founded in 1907 .
He also dealt with trams. He was fluent in French and was often with his wife in Paris at Blondel's house , who had independently devised a dioptric method for distributing light for street lighting. After his retirement he lived in Greystones, Teffont, near Salisbury .
