Alexandre Quintanilha

Alexandre Tiedtke Quintanilha (born September 8, 1945 in Lourenco Marques , today Maputo , Mozambique ) is a Portuguese scientist, politician and LGBT activist.

Live and act

Alexandre Quintanilha was born in what was then the Portuguese colony of Portuguese East Africa (modern-day Mozambique). He studied biophysics and cell biology at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg , where he also received his doctorate in 1972.

This was followed by activities as a lecturer and professor for biophysics for twenty years at the University of Berkeley , California, USA. He was also president of the local Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 1990 he returned to Portugal and became a full professor of biophysics and cellular biology at the University of Porto .

Since 2015 he has been a member of the national parliament of Portugal for the socialist party PS . He is chairman of various ethics committees in parliament.

He is the author of around six specialist books on biophysics in Portugal.

Alexandre Quintanilha lives in Porto with his husband, the American writer Richard Zimler . In 1978 they met in San Francisco . At the height of the AIDS epidemic, they both moved to Portugal in 1990. Both have been married to each other since 2010. His coming out had Quintanilha at the age of sixteen.
