Richard Zimler

Richard Zimler (* 1956 in Roslyn Heights , Nassau County , New York State ) is an American-Portuguese journalist and writer .

After graduating with degrees in comparative religion ( Duke University , 1977) and journalism ( Stanford University , 1982), he worked as a journalist for eight years, mostly in the San Francisco area . In 1990 he moved to Porto (Portugal), where he has been teaching journalism at the university since then .

He has both American and Portuguese citizenship.

His novels have appeared on bestseller lists in 12 different countries, including the US, UK, Portugal, Italy and Australia.

Zimler won numerous prizes for his work, including the 1994 National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Fiction and the 1999 Herodotus Award in the category of best historical US first novel . "The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon" was named Book of the Year by three recognized critics in Great Britain and both "The Search for Sana" and "Hunting Midnight" were nominated for the "International IMPAC Literary Award" by the Portuguese book trade.

Zimler also writes reviews for the LA Times and the San Francisco Chronicle . He has been married to the Portuguese physicist Alexandre Quintanilha since 2010 .
