Alexandre Soares dos Santos

Elísio Alexandre Soares dos Santos (born September 23, 1935 in Porto - † August 16, 2019 ) was a Portuguese entrepreneur .

Life

After graduating from Colégio Almeida Garrett in his hometown of Porto, he began studying law at the University of Lisbon , which he dropped out. He then worked for the Unilever group. During his international assignments for Unilever, which brought him to Ireland and also to Germany, he became Marketing Director of Unilever Brasil in 1968 . In 1969 he was serving in Brazil when his father died. He was president of the Jerónimo Martins group of companies, on whose board of directors Alexandre Soares dos Santos had belonged since 1968. He then returned to Portugal and later assumed leadership as CEO from 1996 to 2013 when he stepped down. The group of companies came largely intact through the economic turmoil after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

At the end of the 1980s he went public, acquired various other companies in the food industry (including Iglo and Feira Nova), and expanded to Great Britain , the Netherlands and especially to Poland , where Jerónimo Martins is the market leader with its local brands (especially Biedronka ) was in the grocery store.

Soares dos Santos was considered the richest Portuguese in 2012 with an estimated fortune of 2.2 billion euros, followed by the previous leader Américo Amorim .

In 2009 Soares dos Santos founded the Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos , named after his father , which is dedicated to the issues of equal opportunities, democracy and civil society in Portugal. He was the bearer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique in the rank of Grand Cross, the Order for Merit and the Order for Merit in Agriculture and Commerce .

Soares dos Santos was married to Maria Teresa Canas Mendes da Silveira e Castro from 1957. They had seven children, two of whom are already on corporate governance bodies. They had 18 grandchildren (2012).
