Alexei Andrejewitsch Poliwanow ( Russian Алексей Андреевич Поливанов ; born March 16, 1855 , † September 25, 1920 in Riga ) was a Russian general and during the First World War temporarily Minister of War .

Life

Poliwanow came from a Russian aristocratic family and graduated from the Nikolayevsk Engineering Academy in Saint Petersburg. He was deployed in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78, then he was a member of the General Staff for several years before becoming its chief in 1905. A year later, after finding out from the lost Russo-Japanese War , he held the position of Deputy Minister of War under Sukhomlinov and campaigned for military and political reforms. In the meantime he was a member of the State Council . After Sukhomlinov's dismissal in June 1915, Polivanov took his post until he was ordered by the Tsarinawas replaced in March 1916 and ceased to appear until 1920. There he offered his help to the Red Army and took part in the peace negotiations between Russia and Poland in Riga. He passed away during the negotiations.
