The Alfa Brewery is a brewery in the family-owned in the South Limburg Schinnen . It has existed since 1870 and is the only one in the Netherlands that uses water from its own underground spring for brewing. She has been purveyor to the Dutch court since 1995.

history

Joseph Meens founded the Meens Brewery in Thull bei Schinnen in 1870 , which was operated together with a farm. The brewing of beer and the sale of spent grains , together with agriculture, provided higher yields. Although the brewing of bottom-fermented "Bavarian" beer became popular at the time of its founding, Meens first produced top-fermented beer. It wasn't until the turn of the century that people switched to bottom-fermented beer production. Until 1960, Alfa beer was only available in the vicinity of the production site. With the growing prosperity the beer became available all over the Netherlands.

The company is now a modernized brewery owned by the fourth generation of the family, who are increasingly brewing seasonal beer specialties. The export to Germany , Great Britain and the USA began in 1993, later also to Greece and Italy .

Since the 125th anniversary in 1995, the brewery Dutch purveyor .

On June 29, 1996, a brewery tasting venue was opened, where the regular beers and the export beer Alfa Lager Super Strong (9%) can be tasted. The bar is also used as a recording room for the "Muziekfabriek" program on the Limburg TV station L1, in which Limburg musicians perform.

Underground spring

The brewing water comes from a centuries-old underground spring in Schinnen, which supplies the appropriate clean and soft water. The amount of water that can be withdrawn each year is limited and therefore all labels on the beer bottles are numbered using laser technology. Meens is the only brewery in the Netherlands to brew its beers with water from an underground spring officially recognized by the Ministry of Health in 1993, which meets the strict requirements for mineral and spring water. The approximately 6000 year old water comes from the Limburg marl rock, which filters the water, from a depth of 152 meters. The spring is one of only 10 officially recognized underground springs in the Netherlands and the only one whose water is used to brew beer. The spring has a capacity of approximately 30 million liters per year, of which 15 million liters are used for brewing beer.

The beer

Alfa only brews with barley , not with corn . Color malt is added for better foam formation .

Until the beginning of the sixties, draft beer was almost exclusively produced. Thereafter, the proportion of bottled beer increased, reaching 95% of the annual production of 120,000 hl in 2015.

With an energy consumption of 210 MJ / hl, according to the Campden BRI Report, the Alfa Brewery is the most energy-efficient of the medium-sized Dutch breweries examined and the second most efficient of the medium-sized European breweries examined. The company uses 100% green energy.
