Alfaroa hondurensis is a Central American tree species from the walnut family(Juglandaceae).

features

Alfaroa hondurensis is a large forest tree up to 25 m in height. The wood is pink. The twigs have oval to elongated lenticels that are darker than the surrounding bark . The branches are bare, young but possibly scaly. Branch ends and petioles are sometimes covered with a wax-like layer that is interspersed with resin droplets. The young leaves are also covered with a resinous excretion. The leaves are opposite, each pair is the same size and up to 30 cm long. The petiole is 4 to 4.5 cm long and swollen at the point of attachment. The rachis is around 10 cm long, bare or covered with a wax-like layer, which disappears with age. There are 6 to 8 leaflets, in rare cases the number is odd. The leaflets are elliptical to elongated lanceolate, pointed to pointed, glabrous on the upper side and covered with numerous small scales on the lower side. A leaf is around 11 to 16 cm long and 3.8 to 5 cm wide. The bottom is significantly lighter than the top. The stalks of the leaflets are 2 to 4 mm long and swollen at the base.

The inflorescence and flowers of the species were not known when it was first described in 1959.

The fruit is oblong-egg-shaped, round to slightly flattened in cross-section. The surface is not hairy, dark brown and covered with many small pustular lenticels. The fruit has no or only indistinct longitudinal ribs. It is around 6.5 cm long and 2.5 to 3 cm in diameter. The scar remains on the fruit. The endocarp wall is thick (4 to 5 mm) and very hard. The ovary is eightfold in the middle.

distribution

The type specimen was found in Honduras , near El Sauce near Lago de Yojoa , in the Santa Bárbara department , at an altitude of 1200 m. The species is geographically clearly separated from the vegetatively quite similar Alfaroa manningii .

The species is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN .
