Alfons Zettler

Alfons Zettler (born October 23, 1953 in Hamburg ) is a German historian .

After graduating from the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium Konstanz, Alfons Zettler studied art history, classical archeology and prehistory and early history from 1972 at the University of Freiburg , and from 1974 history and English studies. After receiving his master's degree in 1979 and his doctorate in 1984 with Karl Schmid , he worked there as an assistant and completed his habilitation in 1994. From 1998 to 2019 he was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Dortmund .

In addition to school and studies, from 1970 he worked for the building and art monument maintenance department of the Freiburg State Monuments Office. In 1978/79 he conducted an archaeological investigation in the Palatinate in Reichenau , from 1980 onwards he carried out excavations in the former Reichenau monastery in Mittelzell as well as architectural studies at St. Georg (Reichenau-Oberzell) .

His research focus is the history and archeology of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. His research projects include learning to write in the Middle Ages, the edition of early medieval necrologies , foundation and memoria between antiquity and the Middle Ages, castle and mining in the Middle Ages (including the excavation of the Birkenburg near St. Ulrich in the Black Forest ) and the functions of the medieval aristocratic castle.
