The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium is one of several large high schools in Konstanz on Lake Constance . It is a mathematical - scientific and predominantly modern language grammar school. In 2005 the school celebrated its 175th anniversary. The city of Konstanz is responsible for the high school. Around 1,000 students are taught by around 90 teachers at the school.
history
The grammar school was founded by Josef Willibald Straßer (1769–1846) in 1830 and later expanded several times. The plans for a new school on Schottenplatz go back to 1897, the foundation stone was laid on November 11, 1901 and the opening was on September 17, 1903. The school was named in 1925 after Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin , the Constance pioneer of airship construction, and in 1948 at the suggestion of the then headmaster Hermann Venedey after the natural scientist and discoverer Alexander von Humboldt .

Lessons offered
The Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium is traditionally oriented towards the natural sciences, but also has a language profile and, as one of the few high schools in Baden-Württemberg, an arts profile. The compulsory courses include firstly the mathematical and natural science area, secondly the linguistic, literary and artistic area and thirdly the social science area.
Profiles
From grade eight onwards, students choose a profile subject as their core subject. The chosen profile subject is counted as the main subject.
Scientific profile
Since the 2001/2002 school year, the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium has been taking part in a school trial with eleven other high schools in Baden-Württemberg, the aim of which is to develop natural science and technology as a core subject of the natural science profile. Project work, working groups and scientific internships serve this purpose. In the experimental phase, the subject is taught for four hours in grades nine, ten and eleven. The basic sciences of biology, chemistry, geosciences and physics are taught to the same extent in all profiles.
Mathematics high school
As a mathematical and natural science grammar school, one of the main focuses is mathematics. The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium has formed a working group for youth research and regularly takes part in the competitions Mathematics Without Borders and Mathematics Day.
Linguistic profile
Italian is the third foreign language in the language profile. There are various working groups in the linguistic area for the students with this profile.
Fine arts profile
Since 1997, in addition to regular lessons in an art class, pupils have been able to deal more intensively with the practical, artistic and theoretically reflective areas of the subject.
Music and sport as a qualified offer
A four-hour course is also possible in music and sport through cooperation with other general high schools.
Additional courses and study groups
In addition, there are various working groups at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium.
Project to redesign the schoolyard
One project of the student working group on environmental issues was the redesign of the schoolyard to be environmentally and student-friendly. The project was awarded a second main prize in the 1996/1997 federal environmental competition and the Baden-Württemberg State Nature Conservation Prize in 1997.
Partnerships / student exchanges
At the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium there is an annual student exchange with the Konstanz twin cities Richmond (Great Britain) and Fontainebleau (France). In addition, students from several grammar schools in Konstanz visit the Czech twin town of Tábor every two years . A three-week stay in America in Orange County (California) has recently been offered every year .
