Drury Lane (Henry Dixon & Alfred and John Bool, 1876)

Alfred Henry Bool (* 1844 in London ; † 9 December 1926 in Wimbledon ) and John James Bool (* 1850 in London; † 14 December 1933 ) opened photography studios in the London borough of Pimlico in the 1860s . John Bool worked in his photo studio until 1918.

The brothers were hired in 1875 by Alfred Marks , director of the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London , to build the Oxford Arms Inn , Lincoln's Inn , Smithfield Area , Temple Bar , Grey's Inn Lane , St. Bartholomew's and Photograph Cloth Fair .

The album prints , which were the photographic standard of the time, were made by the brothers in Henry Dixon's company .

Album prints can fade after a short time. That was cause for concern. Since the photographs were commissioned in order to preserve buildings, some of which were built before the Great Fire of London in 1666 and which were to give way to urban redevelopment measures at the end of the 19th century , in the memory of architects and people with an antiquarian sense, it was important to choose a technique that would last for generations. In 1870 the pigment printing process was invented, which was a long-term solution. Dixon mastered the process masterfully, the photographic images are still of excellent technical quality today.

From 1879 Dixon took over the commission of the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London completely and produced the other series using the new technology.

Not only the photographic images were preserved. Some of the buildings that were then threatened with demolition are now listed and have been restored.

In 1977 works by Alfred & John Bool and Henry Dixon were shown at documenta 6 in Kassel.
