Alfred Friedmann (born October 26, 1845 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 13, 1923 in Berlin ) was a German writer and translator.

Life

Friedmann came from a long-established family and, after finishing school, learned the trade of a businessman at a Hanau jeweler. He then lived for some time in London and Paris , where he worked in his profession and self- taught .

From 1868 Friedmann studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Zurich . He was able to successfully complete this course in 1870 with his dissertation “The individual's right and duty” and was thus awarded the “Dr. phil. " doctorate . As a subsequent stay in Paris was impossible for him ( Franco-German War ), he settled in Vienna as a writer and translator .

In 1886 Friedmann returned to Germany and lived as a writer and translator in Berlin. There he died at the age of 77 on February 13, 1923 and was also buried there.

reception

Friedmann's literary work spans an arc from poetry to modern novels (of his time). In addition to his plays, his translations - which have been favorably reviewed by contemporary literary critics - should not be forgotten either.
