He was born as the son of bank employees Eduard Gehrig and Pauline, nee Storm. Through his mother he was Gottlieb Duttweiler's cousin and later, like four of his brothers, worked at Migros in Zurich. He married the working-class daughter Emilie Schaub and did his banking apprenticeship at the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt in Zurich. In 1932 he became an employee of Migros in Zurich. In 1945 he was the founder and director of the Migros Geneva Cooperative , which he headed until 1976. As early as 1945, the first shop under his direction opened at 3, Rue du Port near Rue du Rhône with ten employees. From 1953 to 1959 he was an administrative member of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives , from 1965 its vice-president and 1973 to 1984 its president.
In addition, Alfred Gehrig headed numerous Migros sub-companies (such as Conserves Estavayer SA , Micarna SA , Seba Aproz SA and, in 1951, Reederei Zürich AG ) and was a delegate of the board of directors of Migros Waadt and Migros Wallis . In 1958 he campaigned for the purchase of the Aproz mineral water spring , a decision against Gottlieb Duttweiler's will.
In the 38th legislature from December 4, 1967 to November 28, 1971 he was National Councilor in the canton of Geneva for the constituency of Geneva .
