history

Until the ban on branches was lifted , Migros was not present in the Geneva region. On July 12, 1945, the Société coopérative Migros Genève was founded, which joined the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) on August 25. When she opened her first branch on the Rue du Port in Geneva on October 20 , there was violent tumult among Migros opponents and several dozen police officers had to protect the shop from rioting demonstrators. The opposition recognized that Migros could not be driven out with the use of force and went over to delivery boycotts . Migros in Geneva had to obtain some of its goods from Bern , but gradually managing director Alfred Gehrig , a cousin of Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler , managed to gain the trust of the suppliers. He remained at the head of the company until 1976.

In 1957, construction began on the La Praille distribution center in Carouge , the first phase of which went into operation three years later. In 1962 the first supermarket in Geneva opened, which was also the first Migros branch in Switzerland to have a fish department. In 1967 the cooperative carried out a controversial ballot when it put the sale of cigars, cigarettes and tobacco products up for discussion - expressly against the will of the MGB and the Gottlieb and Adele Duttweiler Foundation . The members rejected the proposal with 6954 to 4577 votes. On September 2, 1971, the cooperative opened the Balexert in Vernier , the second Migros shopping center in Switzerland.

In 1990 the cooperative contacted two companies from France in order to find suitable locations across the border. It did this unofficially at first, as it was unclear at the time whether the statutes of the MGB even allowed such a procedure. With a contract change between the MGB and the cooperatives in April 1991, expansion abroad was officially allowed. Migros Geneva then founded the French subsidiary Migros Frane SA . This opened a shopping center in Thoiry on September 1, 1993 . Exactly one year later, another shopping center followed in Étrembières near Annemasse . The supermarket in Neydens, including the Vitram leisure center, has existed since September 9, 2009.
