Alfred Paul Jahn (born April 16, 1937 in Duisburg ) is a German pediatric surgeon .

Life

In 1955, after graduating from high school, he began studying at East Berlin's Humboldt University , which he finished in 1961. He then worked as an assistant doctor in Mecklenburg and East Berlin. On February 2, 1963, he managed to escape to West Berlin .

Hans-Dieter Grabes film "The Heligoland in Vietnam" from 1966 moved Alfred Jahn to go to Vietnam as an assistant doctor . He worked in Vietnam and in the East Asian region in the 1970s. He became known through the documentary Just light fights in the Da Nang area by Hans-Dieter Grabe and Carl-Franz Hutterer, who reported unadorned from Vietnam and caused an outcry in Germany, mainly because of the napalm victims , the recordings of surgical methods and the reports from Doctors / staff working on the hospital ship Helgoland .

From 1983 until his retirement in 2002, Jahn was chief physician in pediatric surgery at the St. Marien children's hospital in Landshut . Since 1997 he has also been treating children with war mutilation in Kigali ( Rwanda ) free of charge. He has lived in Rwanda since 2002. He is the only pediatric surgeon in the country and looks after orphans.
