Alfred Kleiner (born April 24, 1849 in Maschwanden ; † July 3, 1916 in Bern ) was a Swiss physicist and university professor. He was a professor of physics at the University of Zurich .

Life

Alfred Kleiner first studied medicine at the universities of Zurich and Berlin and graduated in 1872 with the state examination. He then turned to physics and received his doctorate two years later at the University of Zurich with a dissertation that he had worked on with Johann Jakob Müller at the Polytechnic . He submitted his habilitation at the university and at the polytechnic. Until 1879 he worked as an assistant at the polytechnic. In 1879 he was appointed associate professor and in 1885 full professor of physics at the University of Zurich. In 1915 he retired. From 1908 to 1910 he was rector and from 1890 to 1915 on the education council of the canton of Zurich .

Kleiner researched the temperature dependence of the specific heat and the heat of solution as well as the dielectric behavior of non-ideal insulators and examined the possible influence of an intermediate medium on gravity . For 30 years he was director of the physics institute and Albert Einstein's doctoral supervisor.
