Ernst Gagliardi (born January 7, 1882 in Zurich ; † January 22, 1940 there ) was a Swiss historian . He was Professor of General and Swiss History at the University of Zurich .

Life

Ernst Gagliardi was the son of a telegraph operator from Prato-Sornico . He attended high school in Zurich (Matura in 1900) and then studied history and art history in Munich, Berlin and Zurich, where he received his doctorate in 1906.

Gagliardi worked on the manuscript catalog of the Zurich City Library (later the Central Library ), which was first published in 1931–37 (expanded edition 1982).

In 1910 Gagliardi was appointed private lecturer, in 1919 associate professor and later full professor for general and Swiss history at the University of Zurich.

Gagliardi published mainly on Swiss history and personalities such as Alfred Escher , Hans Waldmann and Otto von Bismarck .

In 1939 Gagliardi was awarded the Gottfried Keller Prize .

Ernst Gagliardi's estate is in the Zurich Central Library.
