Alfred Knaller

Alfred Knaller (born October 29, 1931 in Jadersdorf ; † April 4, 2019 in Spittal an der Drau ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and retail salesman. From 1984 to 1989 he was a member of the Federal Council and mayor of the Weissensee community .

education and profession

Alfred Knaller completed compulsory school from 1936 to 1946 and then learned the trade of retail salesman. He also attended the commercial vocational school and completed training in the trade with attending various seminars organized by the Spar Austria trade association. Professionally, he worked as a commercial clerk in the grocery trade until 1953, after which he went into business for himself in 1953 with a Spar brand grocery store and an attached guesthouse with camping and beach. From 1953 he continued to run his parents' agricultural and forestry business and in 1965 became managing director of the Weißensee Bergbahn GesmbH. He was also a member of the regional committee of the Spar trade association for Carinthia and East Tyrol and at the same time deputy to this organization. In 1972 Alfred Knaller finally took over the grocery store founded by his great-grandfather in 1883.

Politics and functions

Alfred Knaller was involved in local politics and was elected mayor of the Weissensee community in 1964. From 1965 onwards, he acted as local party chairman of the Weißensee branch of the Austrian People's Party and from 1988 to 1990 he was the district party chairman of the ÖVP Spittal an der Drau. He was also the district chairman deputy of the Austrian Economic Association of the Spittal an der Drau district group and from 1985 onwards he was the district chairman of the Carinthian community association. Knaller was also the representative for the Drautal valley, deputy head of the regional committee for the grocery trade of the Chamber of Commerce for Carinthia and in various cultural associations in the Weißensee community. He represented the Carinthian People's Party from October 30, 1984 to April 20, 1989 in the Austrian Federal Council.
