Alfred Müller had been working in Cologne since 1870 at the latest. His first major construction project there was the execution of the new Cologne City Theater (1870–1872), based on designs by the architects Julius Carl Raschdorff and Heinrich Deutz. From around 1877 to around 1886 he was associated with the architect Rudolf de Voss ( de Voss & Müller office ). After their separation, de Voss entered into another partnership with Friedrich Wilhelm Otto Müller called Vollmer (also Müller-Vollmer), while Alfred Müller entered into a partnership with the architect Otto Grah ( Müller & Grah office ). By adding the maiden name of his wife, Mathilde Grah , Otto's older sister, he was subsequently called Alfred Müller-Grah. In conjunction with its respective partners, it created numerous residential and commercial buildings, villas and commercial buildings in Cologne, but also in the region from Erpel to Solingen .

His grave is located in Cologne's Südfriedhof (hall 12, sponsorship grave of the Steinkrüger family).
