Alfred Michiels
Joseph Alfred Xavier Michiels (born December 25, 1813 in Rome , † October 28, 1892 in Paris ) was a French writer and historian .
Michiels, who came from a Dutch family, came to France with them in 1817, studied law in Strasbourg from 1834, but then turned exclusively to literary and art history in Paris .
He published:
- Études sur l'Allemagne (1839, reprint 1845, 2nd edition 1850);
- Histoire des idées littéraires en France au XIX. siècle (1842, 2 vols.);
- Voyage d'un amateur en Angleterre (1844, 4th ed. 1872);
- Histoire de la peinture flamande et hollandaise (Brussels 1845, 4 vol .; new edition 1865–1876, 10 vol.), A work that involved him in a violent polemic with Arsène Houssaye , with the continuation:
- L'art flamand dans l'est et le midi de la France (1877);
- L'architecture et la peinture en Europe depuis le V. au XVI. siècle (1853, 3rd ed. 1873);
- Rubens et l'école d'Anvers (4th ed. 1877);
