Alfred Schmidt (mechanical engineer)
Friedrich Alfred Schmidt (born August 30, 1879 in Olvenstedt ; † February 7, 1938 in Düsseldorf-Düsseltal ) was a German mechanical engineer and manager.
Life
Alfred Schmidt, son of the farmer Eduard Schmidt, studied mechanical engineering at the Köthen commercial college after attending secondary school in Magdeburg and completing a practical year . There he became a member of the Marchia Academic Association, later the Corps Marchia Braunschweig. After a three-month study trip to the United States , he worked as an engineer and chief engineer for various domestic and foreign companies in the pipeline sector. As a combatant in the First World War, he was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd and 1st class. From 1920 he was director and sole board member of Allgemeine Rohrleitung AG and Herweg AG in Düsseldorf. Under his leadership, Allgemeine Rohrleitung AG had grown from small beginnings to a leading provider of complete pipeline systems and special constructions in the process industry with plants in Düsseldorf-Oberbilk and Reisholz. The economic success was based in particular on Schmidt's technical inventions, for which he received around twenty patents, some of which were international applications. The folded tube he invented became particularly well-known and achieved significant advantages in the stress-free piping of high-pressure steam turbines, among other things.
