Alfred Ursprung (born December 22, 1876 in Basel , † April 21, 1952 in Freiburg ) was a Swiss botanist .

Life

Alfred Ursprung was a son of the Basel city ​​geometer Peter Ursprung and Margaretha Ursprung, née Hartmann. In 1911 he married Lina Roesle, daughter of Alexander Roesle, from Säckingen .

He studied mathematics and physics in Basel and Strasbourg and obtained his doctorate in 1900 under Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper on the subject of "Annual ring formation in tropical wood species". He then went to the University of Freiburg , where he received his habilitation in 1903. He was associate professor there from 1903 and full professor from 1907. His research dealt mainly with the water balance of plants and their water transport. Origin was a member of the Leopoldina and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences .
