Alfred Wolff (philologist)

Alfred Wolff (born January 28, 1885 in Thorn ; † July 24, 1917 ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Alfred Wolff came from the emancipated Jewish petty bourgeoisie. Like his parents, the businessman Raphael Wolff and Jenny geb. Hausmann, he belonged to the Jewish faith all his life. From 1893 he attended the high school in Thorn , which was then headed by Michael Hayduck . After graduation (February 28, 1902) Wolff studied classical philology and history, first at the University of Breslau , later in Munich , Berlin and Halle (Saale) . Among his academic teachers, he particularly emphasized Otto Kern and Benedikt Niese . Kern supervised his doctoral thesis, with which he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . In Halle, Wolff also got in touch with Georg Wissowa , who later won him over as a collaborator for the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity (RE). His fellow student Georg Herlitz describes Wolff as a supporter of Zionism .

On November 21, 1908, Wolff passed the teaching examination in Latin, Greek and history and then prepared for the school service in Prussia, which took him to various Berlin schools. He completed the seminar year at the Andreas Realgymnasium from Easter 1909. For the probationary year he moved to the Kölln High School at Easter 1910 , where he was appointed as a scientific assistant teacher on April 1, 1911. On July 1, 1914, he went to the Lessing High School as a senior teacher .

In addition to his school service, Wolff continued to do research. His research focus was the intellectual history of Judaism from antiquity to modern times. In 1913 he won the first prize of the Mendelssohn Tolerance Foundation for a study on the idea of ​​tolerance in German literature at the time of Moses Mendelssohn .

When the First World War broke out , Wolff volunteered. He served as a sergeant in the infantry and fell on July 24, 1917.
