There he gradually took over command of his tribe in Astrabad and declared himself independent from the Zand Shahs. As a result, Zaki Khan, Ali Murad Khan's uncle, sent an army under his command against the Qajars.

Ali Murad Khan was given the command of the Persian army to defeat the Qajars, but he betrayed the incumbent Shah Abol Fath Khan and left him defenseless in the capital, Shiraz , where he was murdered by Sadiq Khan . Ali Murad Khan conquered Isfahan . He imposed heavy taxes on the people and executed those who refused to pay. On March 14th, he finally took Shiraz and overthrew Sadiq Khan from his throne.
