Alisher Saipov ( Uzbek Alisher Soipov, Алишер Соипов ; born September 4, 1981 in the Kyrgyz SSR ; † October 24, 2007 in Osh , Kyrgyzstan ) was a Kyrgyz journalist . He belonged to the Uzbeks' minority .

Saipov was one of the most famous journalists in Central Asia . He was the editor of the Uzbek-language weekly newspaper Siyosat , and wrote and published regular critical reports on Uzbek President Islom Karimov . He also reported for several western media outlets, most notably Voice of America and Radio Free Europe .

On October 24, 2007, he was shot dead by strangers while leaving the office of Radio Free Europe in Osh . According to the BBC , Saipov had told his friends two days before his death that he was being followed by the Uzbek secret service. A month earlier he had been described by a regional television station in the Uzbek city of Namagan as an "accomplice of forces trying to destabilize the country".

After the murder, the Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev announced that he would be personally involved in the investigation.

In November 2008, the Kyrgyz interior minister, Dmitry Fedorov, denied that the Uzbek secret service had been involved in the assassination of Saipov. Rather, the son of a high-ranking official was involved.
