Alison Prince

Alison Prince (born March 26, 1931 in Beckenham , Greater London , † October 12, 2019 on the Isle of Arran ) was a British writer and screenwriter .

Life

Alison Prince was born in 1931 in the Beckenham district of the London Borough of Bromley . She grew up in south London and attended a girls' school there. After graduating from high school, Prince attended the Slade School of Fine Art for a course , but only found odd jobs afterwards. She therefore went to Goldsmiths University , where she received a diploma as a teacher. Prince then taught at the Elliott School in Putney . After she married a teacher there and became a mother of three, Prince stopped teaching. After the marriage ended, Prince ran a small farm in Suffolk for eight years .

Alison Prince began her career on children's television. From 1967 she worked as a screenwriter for the stop-motion television series Trumpton . Her first children's book was published in 1968 under the title Joe and a Horse and other stories about Joe from 'Watch with Mother' , which was also based on a television series. In the late 1970s, Prince left television to work exclusively as an author of children's and youth books.

Alison Prince has received several awards for her work. Among other things, she was nominated for a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 1987 . In 1996 she won the Guardian Award for the youth novel The Sherwood Hero and was one of the nominees for the Angus Book Award of 2003 for her work Oranges, Murderers and a Book . In 2005 Prince was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester . She remained active as a writer until her death. Her works published in German-speaking countries include the anthologies Aus heiterem Himmel and Auf leisen Pfoten , published in 1989 and 1990 , which contain short horror stories for young people.

Alison Prince lived on the Isle of Arran and had four children, three of them with her husband, who died in 1991, and one son from a previous relationship. She died after a long illness on October 12, 2019 at the age of 88.
