Alkmaion in Psophis
Alkmaion in Psophis ( Greek Ἀλκμαίων ὁ διὰ Ψωφῖδος ) is a tragedy by the Greek playwright Euripides that has only survived in fragments . Was first performed as the second part of a tetralogy on the occasion of Dionysia . The first part of the tetralogy was the piece Die Kreterinnen , after Alkmaion in Psophis Telephos followed and then instead of a satyr play the piece Alcestis .
In his early works, Euripides followed the formula of following a play about an angry woman with a play about a woman in need in addition to Dionysia. Alkmaion in Psophis treats as the second part of the tetralogy the fate of Alkmaion's wife Arsinoe , the daughter of King Phegeus of Psophis in Arcadia . The content of the play is partially reproduced by Pausanias and in the library of Apollodorus , according to which Arsinoe is married to the mad Alkmaion, abandoned and robbed by him and finally sold as a slave by her brothers.
