Life

After completing his physics - studying at the Technical University of Dresden in 1995 concluded Dirk Burghardt, a qualification course for the doctorate at the Department of Mathematical Methods in Geodesy and Cartography of the Institute for Planetary Geodesy of the Technical University of Dresden, which he in May 2000 with his dissertation on the subject of automation of cartographic displacement by means of energy minimization . He then took up a position as a product manager at the Swiss company Maptech AG, for which he had been working as a software developer as part of a 50% job since May 1998 . Here he worked until the company's bankruptcy in September 2001 in the area of research and development for products for the production of topographic and thematic maps .

From January 2002 to February 2009 Dirk Burghardt was senior assistant at the Geographical Institute, GIScience Center of the University of Zurich and headed the Cartographic Visualization research group with three doctoral students and two post-doctoral students . At the same time, from October 2005 to March 2006, he was a substitute professor (W3 professorship) at the Institute for Cartography and Geoinformation at the University of Bonn , where teaching , research and administration were among his tasks. On May 29, 2008, Dirk Burghardt completed his habilitation on "Automated generalization in digital and mobile cartography" in Zurich and on March 1, 2009 he took up the professorship for cartographic communication at the Institute for Cartography at the Technical University of Dresden , which he still holds today.

The company's main his research activities mainly include the automation of production - and update processes in the field of topographic and thematic mapping, the mobile developing methods and multimedia teaching of space- time information and bidirectional communication involving user-generated content and Empirical Studies about the suitability of different cartographic display techniques and methods depending on the context of use.

Dirk Burghardt has been chairman of the Commission on Generalization and Multiple Representation of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) since 2011 .

Dirk Burghardt is married and has two daughters and a son.
