history

A conference of church organizations in Africa, which was launched in 1958 in Ibadan ( Nigeria ) by the ecumenically committed Presbyterian Akanu Ibiam , led to the founding of the AACC. This met for the first time on April 20, 1963 in Kampala ( Uganda ) under the motto: "Freedom and unity in Christ". The delegates discussed the post-colonial situation in Africa and criticized the nationalistic spirit that permeated many African states at the time. They called for overcoming the divisions of the continent and "to participate wholeheartedly in building the African nation". In the period that followed, the AACC supported national and regional churches in participating in the process of decolonization and economic development in their countries. It played a significant role in the elimination of the South African apartheid regime . Nowadays the AACC focuses on issues such as poverty reduction and social justice, the fight against the HIV / AIDS pandemic and international relations from the point of view of economy, ethics and morals. The aim here is to integrate the regional churches into a coherent international network.

The AACC has met in various African cities since it was founded. In 2003, under the motto "Come Let Us Rebuild", in Yaoundé ( Cameroon ) after disappointing decades of inner-African discord, war and corruption, the Kampala motto was taken up again. The conference took place in Maputo ( Mozambique ) on December 7th and 12th, 2008 . The 50th anniversary of the AACC was celebrated from June 3 to 10, 2013 at the General Assembly in Kampala, Uganda. The eleventh General Assembly will take place from July 1 to 7, 2018 in Kigali , Rwanda .
