Allagrapha aerea is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) from the owl butterfly family(Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 34 millimeters. The upper side of the forewing is copper-colored, nut-brown or light brown in color and almost without drawing. The apex is very pointed and slightly flared. Metallic shimmering flaws, which are typical of most gold owl species , are absent from this species . The submarginal region is sometimes slightly gold-colored in newly hatched specimens. The hind wings are light brown to gray-brown in color and have a slightly darkened border area. The thorax is furry and provided with a thick tuft of hair. The abdomen has other smaller tufts of hair, the proboscis is well developed.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are grass-green in color. They show thin, white, interrupted secondary lines, small white dots, a yellow and white side stripe and a few short gray hairs.
Similar species
- Diachrysia leonina is native to East Asia only, so there is no geographical overlap between the two species.
- Diachrysia aereoides differs in its yellow-white outer transverse line.
Distribution and occurrence
Allagrapha aerea occurs in southeastern Canada as well as in the east and middle of the USA . The species primarily colonizes field and meadow landscapes.
Way of life
The moths fly in two generations a year, mainly in June and September. They visit flowers to eat and appear at night in artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the nettle family (Urticaceae), daisy family (Asteraceae) or soybeans ( Glycine max ).
