Allan Rosas

Allan Viktor Johnsson Rosas (born May 6, 1948 in Turku ) is a Finnish lawyer and judge at the European Court of Justice .

Live and act

Rosas studied law at the University of Turku , where he graduated in 1971. In 1977 he received his PhD from the University of Turku. iur. PhD. He then worked there as a lecturer until 1981. From 1981 he held the full Armfelt Chair for Constitutional and International Law at the University of Turku and from 1985 was also director of the Institute for Human Rights there. He was also Vice President of the University of Turku in 1994/95. In 1995 he moved to the European Commission , where he became the main legal advisor in their legal service and was responsible for external relations. In March 2001 he became Deputy Director General of the Legal Service of the European Commission. He has also served as a representative of the Finnish government and an expert on Finnish law at numerous international conferences.

On January 17, 2002, Rosas became a judge at the European Court of Justice . He has been there since October 2003. Rosas was also awarded an honorary doctorate in political science by the Universities of Turku and Neuchâtel and an honorary doctorate in political science from the Åbo Akademi . He has also published extensively in the field of international public law, human rights and the law of the European Union. He is a lead author of the Turku Declaration on Minimum Humanitarian Standards .
