Every year is a four-part, German mini-series by director Matthias Schmidt . The first episode dates from 2010 and represented Schmidt's serial diploma at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy . It was broadcast for the first time on Christmas Eve in the same year on NDR .

The other three episodes were created in 2013 and were funded by Nordmedia . In the Christmas season 2013, all episodes were broadcast on both NDR and BR .

It is a very special kind of family epic. Many short episodes illuminate the history of the average German Sommer family over the years 1977 to 2010. Each episode takes place on Christmas Eve. The summer attempt to spend a harmonious Christmas party together always fails because of the pitfalls of everyday life, the pitfalls of family relationships, and the human weaknesses of all those involved.
