The Allee-Center Essen was opened as the Altenessen shopping center on November 2, 1973 in the Altenessen district of Essen .
facts and figures
The Allee-Center now has a sales area of around 20,000 square meters. The branch mix of 80 specialty shops is dominated by the textile sector, and a large part of the sales area is taken up by a department store.
The shopping center, which currently has around 590 employees, has around 20,250 visitors a day. The operator ECE Projektmanagement GmbH , based in Hamburg, assumes a catchment area of 321,280 inhabitants.
history
The construction of the first shopping center of this kind in Essen, with more than 50 stores under one roof, coincided with the time when structural change began in the industrial north of Essen, to which Altenessen belongs. The last large coal mines in the district, such as the United Helene & Amalie colliery (1965) and the Fritz-Heinrich colliery (1973) , closed by the opening year . In the resulting economically difficult time, the shopping center contributed to the formation of a new center in Altenessen.
The shopping center was first expanded in 1978. Ten years later it was modernized, adding a glass elevator. In 1999 a glass roof was installed. In 2000, the shopping center was given today's round main entrance facade and was renamed from Altenessen shopping center to Allee-Center . From 2010 to June 2012 the shopping center was rebuilt for around 28 million euros. The reason was that around 10,000 square meters of space were vacated by the previous anchor tenant Hertie , who had already been taken over by Karstadt and withdrew from the center. The company MBN Bau was involved in this expansion .
Accessibility and infrastructure
The Allee-Center has 620 parking spaces and 30 bicycle parking spaces. The shopping center can be reached by public transport using the U11 and U17 underground lines , Altenessen-Mitte stop. It can also be reached via the A 42 and the B 224 .
