The Allen Glacier is a glacier in the US state of Alaska . It is located in the Chugach National Forest 60 km east-northeast of Cordova .
geography
The 28 km long Allen Glacier has its nutrient area at an altitude of 1000 m in the Chugach Mountains northwest of Mount Williams . This borders in the south on the nutrient areas of the Sheridan and Childs glaciers . The average 2.7 km wide Allen Glacier flows in an easterly direction and ends 5 km before the west bank of the Copper River . The glacier tongue is eight miles north of the Miles Glacier Bridge , also known as the Million Dollar Bridge , on the eastern end of the Copper River Highway . Below the glacier tongue is a 3.5 km long glacial rim lake , which flows over the 6 km long Allen River to the Copper River.
Naming
The glacier was named in honor of Henry Tureman Allen (1859-1930), a US officer who explored the area in 1885 and later rose to major general and was commanding general of the American troops in Germany from 1919 to 1923 .
